A days fishing at 5 Acres Lake, North Cave. The lake was taken over from its previous owners and opened in March 2012 after considerable restocking. Also I could see there was a lot of work had been done to provide comfortable pegs with easy access. A number of pegs have been made for disabled anglers but I could see that most of the pegs fitted the criteria for disabled access. It would be advisable to take some form of rod rest instead of banksticks as most pegs have fishing platforms constructed of decking. The north bank is quite open for easy access whereas the south bank is covered in young trees and not so easily accessible should make some good carp pegs as they grow. My day started at 8.00 am with the sun shining and a light westerly breeze just showing a few ripples on the surface. Carp were cruising and on most parts of the lake. Sadie did say the lake seems to fish better when there is only a light breeze or its flat calm. Being a Carper I did not set up for coarse fish so I cant comment other than the pegs looked very inviting. I decided to fish about 3 pegs from the west end of the lake in the shallower water where the carp where swimming in the margins. I tried a number of methods: - (1) Zig-rig with home tied bug then later switched to fake floating bread. (2) Method feeder using spray flavoured bread flake, later switching to white popup boillie. Both methods proved ineffective as there seemed to be quite a lot of blanket weed on the bottom. (3) floating crust towards the margins proved effective with a 10lb. 14oz mirror carp at 12 o-clock, a 4lb. 8oz mirror carp at 2.15pm and a 12lb. 1oz mirror carp at 5.00. All three fish proved to be very good fighters in fact the 4lb 8oz fish caught up in an overhanging tree branch so it was a matter of boots off trousers rolled up and wading out to free it. Unfortunately with wind changed to an easterly late afternoon and strengthened causing quite a few waves at the westerly end of the lake. In fact the wind became quite cool. I called it a day at 6pm, chuffed as I had caught my first carp of the season, not monstrous but well worth catching. This fishery is one to keep an eye on for the carper as the Carp get bigger and one which is definitely worth a visit for the coarse angler, especially disable anglers. John Twidale
