Fisherman lands a 482lb halibut off Alaskan coast

A 218kg (482lb) Pacific halibut caught off the coast of Alaska, by Jack McGuire, a California angler

Jack McGuire, a 72-year-old keen angler from Santa Ana, California has just had a fishing trip to remember.

His most recent weeklong trip to Glacier Bay, Alaska has been a very successful one.

On July 11, 2014, 76-year-old Jack caught a 218kg (482lb) Pacific halibut.

McGuire struggled for 40 minutes before the giant fish was reeled in.

"The moment I set the hook I hollered, I got a big one!", McGuire told reporters. "We get in the back of the boat and we get in this battle."

"It was a back-and-forth battle," McGuire told KTLA. "During that battle, I was putting a hundred-percent strain in. I was trying to wear him out as quick as I possibly could."

His catch outweighs the 459-pound Pacific halibut caught in Alaska in 1996 that is the world record, but it doesn't meet International Game Fish Association regulations.

The 95-inch-long halibut was shot, then harpooned before it was brought aboard the boat, disqualifying the catch from being considered for a world record.

He says the boat captain shot the giant fish to keep it from flopping around and hurting someone.

He applauded the decision, even if it contributed to him not getting the record.

"That’s a catch of a lifetime," he said.

"I still feel very appreciative of the fact that it wasn’t my miracle way of fishing — it was the same bait everyone else uses and all that — so a lot of it has to do with sheer luck," he told KTLA. "Being Irish helps."
