Angler lands record 68lb catch, ending a 10-year mission

ANGLER Dean Fletcher ended a 10-year mission when he finally landed “The Parrot” - Britain's biggest freshwater fish at 68lb 1oz

Greengrocer Dean, 53, caught the giant mirror carp (nicknamed because of its beak-like mouth) after fishing for three years at Cranwells Lake on the Wasing Estate near Newbury, Berks.

He had waited seven years to get a licence to fish the waters where The Parrot has lured countless anglers.

Dean, from Caversham, Berks, spent 30 minutes reeling in the monster, even wading into the water when it darted behind a sunken tree.

The head gamekeeper used digital scales to confirm he had beaten the British record by nine ounces.

After returning the fish to the lake Dean celebrated with a cup of tea.

He said: “The reason I joined the lake was because of The Parrot. I fished one night per week for three seasons. I must have caught every fish in there apart from The Parrot.

“I suspected it was him when I felt the sheer weight at the end of the line. My knees started going a bit.

“I feel proud to now hold the record. It is very strange that nobody else in Britain has caught a bigger freshwater fish than me.”

The previous record carp was the late Two Tone, at Conningbrook fishery, near Canterbury, Kent.

Oz Holness, who snared it at 67lb 8oz, tweeted Dean: “Big carp. Big buzz. Congratulations!”
