British monster-hunting anglers hook gigantic fish

A group of monster-hunting fishermen pulled up a giant 17-stone catfish

The massive creature took 40 minutes to haul out of the water.

Andrew McCabe, from Harry in Carlisle, and six friends travelled to Spain on a monster fishing trip to the river Ebro Mequinenza.

The water is well known for its collection of massive catfish.

But despite being very experienced fishermen, 55-year-old Andy and his team did not expect to come across this huge creature.

Peter Irwin, 35, runs Monster Catfishing Tours near Zaragoza in Spain and says it’s the biggest he’s ever seen.

He said: “At about 10pm Andrew felt something on his rod and as he struggled to keep hold of the rod I could tell by his face that he was in for the fight of his life.

“He fought this fish, which nobody had seen yet, as it tore off the fishing line metre after metre. So I told him to get in the boat with me, we had no other choice.”

Andrew then duelled with the nightmare fish for a long time until they pulled it into the boat.

Peter said: “I said to Andy this is over 200lb. I grabbed the fish and attempted to pull it into the boat, its head was huge.

“Andy put down his rod and helped me pull a huge catfish and we laughed at the sheer size of this fish.”

He added: “It’s the fish of so many people’s dreams, what else can I say.”

Andrew added: “It was terribly hard work, I nearly give up because it was nearly pulling me over.”

The catfish was returned to the water to swim back to the depths.
