A 50lb salmon caught on the River Tweed

Shamus Jennings, a keen angler who has been fishing for salmon all over the world, has landed the largest fly-caught salmon of 2013.

On October 29, 2013, Shamus landed a massive 22.680kg (50lb) salmon at Boleside beat on the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. The fish was 1.27m (50in) long, with 0.83m (33in) girth.
Dr Ronald Campbell, senior biologist with the Tweed Foundation, using a prescribed formula to calculate a fish’s weight - estimated it at 50lb.

Shamus, a part-owner of the beat with his brother Francis, said that it took almost 45 minutes to get the fish into the net.
He was fishing in Glenmayne pool on a Boleside Shrimp tied by head boatman Nigel Fell. After weighing and photographing it, Shamus released this monster salmon.

"It's taken me almost 40 years to catch a 25 pounder, (which he caught the day before on the same beat) but this is simply incredible," said Shamus.

This catch puts Shamus into a strong position to win the Savills Malloch trophy which is awarded to the angler who catches and releases the biggest rod caught salmon of the year.
Current holders of the coveted prize are Middle Tweed beat Bemersyde, who successfully landed a 19kg (42lb) fish last November. The fish measured 1.27m (50in) long with a girth of 0.65m (25.5in).
