Fishing ban lifted at Corby Boating Lake

A ban on fishing at a popular Corby park has been lifted

Corby Boating Lake

Fishing ban was put in place at Corby Boating Lake in Cottingham Road earlier this month after dead fish were found there.

An investigation revealed some of the lake’s roach had been affected by a naturally-occurring disease called white spot.

But Corby Council has announced that following the short fishing ban at the lake, residents can now fish there again.

Following the investigation, a spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “Once we heard about this incident, we acted quickly to identify the cause. We can now rule out pollution and confirm that only one species of fish is affected. The roach have picked up a naturally-occurring and common disease called white spot. We believe this has happened because it’s coming up to spawning season, so the fishes’ natural immunity is lower than normal. While sad to see, there is nothing untoward going on in the water and this is not something that will spread to other wildlife. We will continue to monitor the situation with our partners at Corby Council.”

The re-opening comes just in time for a have-a-go fishing event for youngsters with an interest in the activity over the bank holiday weekend.

Anyone between the ages of seven and 16 can go along to the one-off fishing session on Monday, May 4, between 11am and 4pm. The session is free and supervised with all equipment and bait provided.
